Hotel Tips

One of the most important ‘life hacks’ is being ready to approach on foot in the end. The hotel is tucked into a pedestrian lane so save a map, pinned precisely to the hotel, or have a picture of the entrance. The easiest way is to walk along the main harbour front route and look for that tiny lane by the Set Fish Restaurant. Since you’ll be mostly walking and possibly climbing stairs, it is best that you pack light. Inform them what time you’ll be arriving at their hotel since owners usually welcome guests.

Guests are welcome to use the hotel’s peaceful courtyard as their very own haven. Pop out for dinner here in a peaceful drink away from the crowds then pop right back into them at the harbour. Owners will give you a better recommendation to a family tavern in the side streets which would be much better food and much better value compared to those they turn to for tourists along the water front. And this is one of the biggest benefits of staying at a small boutique hotel, where all staff knows all-details about all-guests.

The hotel is perfect for exploring the town on foot, but you need to venture a bit farther to see some of the region’s top sights. Rent a tiny car for a day or two of the week so you can visit the magnificent Bellapais Abbey and the spectacularly situated Crusader’s castle of St Hilarion, both high in the mountains above Kyrenia. You may leave the car overnight in one of the Municipal Car Parks just outside the old town walls. That way, you are free to explore without having to drive every day through the tight old town.

Finally, some practical advice. Like many other nations, it has its money: the Turkish Lira (TRY) – so, remember to have a little cash on you for minor purchases, but most food establishments accept credit. Embrace the character of the hotel; it’s not some modern place with facilities like a TV or swimming pool. The luxury here comes in being authentic and calm in location. Spend your time reading a book in their courtyard while listening to birds singing, and feel that incredible sense of stepping back in time.
